The time I’ve spent creating youth education programs are some of the most fulfilling in my career. Some of you know I’ve created quite a few mascots over the years to champion important causes, but my very first one, Mr. Leaky, holds a special place in my heart.

Mr. Leaky was a trailblazer, teaching essential water efficiency tips to thousands of kids across the greater Sacramento region. He was cutting-edge in the mid-90s with his online learning game, and had a cool factor that was perfect for youth.

  • Mid-90s Innovation: We launched an online kids' game featuring Mr. Leaky, a truly cutting-edge approach for the time!
  • Comprehensive Tools: His popular activity book was a staple for learning in classrooms and taking the water efficiency pledge.
  • A True Celebrity: He became a fully costumed character who was a fixture at school and community events.
  • TV and Tattoos: Mr. Leaky appeared on local TV stations, rode a Harley in special events, and handed out thousands of temporary tattoos (with his likeness, of course).

Beyond the fun and fanfare, Mr. Leaky's program used key principles of community-based social marketing. At every event, thousands of youth and their parents took a pledge to be water smart. A pledge is a simple, yet powerful, commitment tool that adds another critical layer of behavior change, helping to cement their promise to implement new, water-saving habits.

Today, Mr. Leaky is a proud elder statesman, giving tips and advice to his mascot brothers and sisters who have followed in his footsteps. Thank you to the employees who helped our mascots teach thousands of youth throughout Northern California about anything from bomb safety to flood preparedness.
